COLLECTIVE RIGHTS MANAGEMENT IN
THE INTERNAL MARKET
Authors' societies, the role of which goes beyond the purely
technical rights management aspects, are essential partners
in the effective exercising of authors' rights, in the promotion
of creative activity and in the harmonious development of
the information society. Back in 1995 in its Green Paper
on Copyright in the Information Society, the European Commission
launched a debate on rights management in the single market,
calling on the parties concerned to take part. GESAC's position
on this matter reflected the views of the twenty-four biggest
European authors' societies and of the 480.000 authors,
rightholders and music publishers it represents.
